■ボストンにある大きな本屋の二階にカフェが併設されていて、新聞を読みながら久しぶりにフィッシュマンズを聴いていたら胸がいっぱいになってしまった。「Aloha Polydor」というアルバムで１９９９年にヴォ−カリスト佐藤伸治がなくなった後にリリースされた。ポリドールからリリースされた楽曲の中からセレクトされている。後半部　8.WALKING IN THE RHYTHM　 9.SEASON 　10.ゆらめき IN THE AIR　この三曲の連なりは圧倒的な迫力がある。サウンドの質の良く似た三曲の中にあって「ゆらめき IN THE AIR」における佐藤のヴォーカルがあまりにも異質で、とらえどころがない。どこか硬く抑制されながらも曲線的、金属を高温で溶かしだすような粘りの強い声質、その緊張から逃れられない。特に「ゆらめき IN THE AIR」の後半部、何の歌詞もなく「アーアーアー」などと声を発する部分は、もうこの金属がドロドロに溶け出し、凝固し、また溶け出す。人間の声とも電子音とも区別のつかない音のうねりへと聴者を放り出して終わる。最後のライヴのDVDが発売されてる。「男達の別れ 98.12.28@赤坂BLITZ」

While reading a newspaper, I lestened Fishmans(Japanese band) after a long time in a cafe on the second floor of a bookstore, and I felt a lump in my throat. The album, "Aloha Polydor", which was released after the vocalist, Sinji Sato, passed away in 1999: These songs were selected from three albums released from Polydor. In the last part of the album, WALKING IN THE RHYTHM, SEASON, and Yurameki IN THE AIR, the sequence of these three songs has overwhelming force. Among the three that have similar quality of the sound, Sato's vocal of "Yurameki IN THE AIR" is distinguished and beyond description. It's strictly restrained but curvous, so to say, steel molten down by intense heat. This tenacious vocal strongly holds the listeners' attention, and we cannot get away from the tention. Especially, in the latter half of the song, Sato's voice is like the steel melting and solidifing and melting again and again. Here, listeners are in a waving of the vocal, which cannot be recognized as an human's voice or an electronic sound or something else. New DVD, "Men's Farewell" 98.12.28@Akasana BLITZ」 recorded the last live, was recently released.
